Colony ships enable the settlement of colonies in other planets. Each colony ship transports one unit of population, taken from the planet it was manufactured on.

The colony ship is eventually replaced by the more expensive advanced colony ship, which should be preferred once your worlds are advanced enough to build them quickly.
